Can You Remember By George Dalton
Can you remember where you were when someone named Timothy McVey parked a rented truck in front of the Murray Building in down town Oklahoma City and killed 169 people?Have you ever visited the memorial to those 169 people who lost their lives that clear cool morning?
For those of you who haven't, let me explain. Across the street to the south of where the Murray Building stood is a small hill, maybe the size of a football field. It sweeps majestically from the curb up to the south. It is not a tall hill, but nestled into the lush green grass on the face of that hill are 169 concrete chairs. As you wind your way through those stone chairs, the first thing you notice is the hush that lingers over the area. There may be one hundred people walking silently through that formation of stone chairs. Each one reverently, reading the names written on the stone chairs.Right in the middle of those 169 stone chairs sits 29 little bitty baby chairs. Each one only about fourteen inches high.It is like these little chairs are surrounded, and protected by the normal size chairs.
Then as you turn to walk away you notice for the first time, you are looking at the back of St Joseph's Old Cathedral church across the street to the west.Standing guard over it all is a ten foot statue of Jesus. He is turned facing slightly away from the hill. It's almost as if he can't bear to see the carnage. Written on the base of the statue is three simple words"and Jesus wept. "
The words found in the Gospel of John are certainly fitting for that scene, but another passage kept coming to my mind, Luke 6:31 is simply known as the golden rule.
You see if everyone just followed this one rule, we would never have to build another memorial like this one.We would never have need for police officers, soldiers or divorce courts. In fact we would need no courts at all.Judges would be sitting around in empty chambers because no one would be on trial, no one would be suing each other. If everyone in the world just "do unto other, as you would like for them to do unto you."No man would ever set off a bomb that would kill 169 people, 29 of which were little babies.
That is why heaven is going to be such a wonderful place because every single person there will be living by this simple rule.
Is it any wonder that our savior weeps for the fallen at the Murray Building, can't you hear him saying "Father if they would only listen."
What is it going to taker for us to turn his country around and back to God? It is not better politicians in Washington, of more police offices. It starts at home, we as Christians, absolutely must do what Deuteronomy 11:19 teaches us. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
I like the way the new living Bible says it.
Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again.
There has been a steady decline in moral responsibility since Weld War 11 when both men and women started to fill the work force. There has not been a parent at home to teach the children, we can not expect our children to just automatically know about God's ways. If we don't teach them God's ways Satan will certainly teach them his ways.Don't you wish Timothy McVay's mother had taught him about The Church and Jesus Christ, or wouldn't be nice if Osama Ben Laden could have had Christian parents to teach him God's laws?
My wife and I raised four wonderful children; they turned out wonderfully, each one active in their church. We don't envy young people today who are raising young families. Young mothers and dads, you can make the difference in whether your young son or daughter grows up to be like an Ambassador Thomas P. Melady or like Timothy McVey. Don't you just know that Timothy McVey's mother has wished a thousand times she had taken time to teach her little boy about God's plan?
Remember this every man or woman, who is a monster today, was a little boy or girl at one time.Let's pray that we never have another terrorist attack in America. If it must happen let us pray that never again will it be one of our children who have grown up with out knowing his God. It is no wonder the statue reads "and Jesus wept."
